Getting Around New York City

Navigating NYC can be one of the biggest expenses, but there are plenty of ways to save money on your New York Christmas trip.

There are many ways to get from LaGuardia to Manhattan. Make sure to pre-plan your trip into the city before you arrive, so you can kick off your holiday adventures with zero hassle, diving right into the festive buzz of NYC!

Subway

Skip the pricey taxis and rideshares and opt for the subway instead. The subway is fast, efficient, and much more budget-friendly.

If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, consider getting an unlimited MetroCard for the duration of your stay.

Walking is also a great way to explore the city, especially when many of the holiday sights are within a short distance of each other.

Where to Stay in NYC at Christmas

I have a full post on choosing where to stay in NYC at Christmas, which you need to read next.

A centrally located hotel in Midtown Manhattan is the ideal place to stay at Christmas, but these hotels can be pricey.

Finding affordable accommodations can be challenging, especially during the holiday season.

My top tip? Book early or look for last-minute deals, such as Black Friday or Travel Tuesday deals, which typically happen the days after Thanksgiving.

Using a third-party discount site, such as Hotwire, for last-minute deals can help you stay on budget.

Free Holiday Attractions in New York City at Christmas

Some of the best holiday experiences in NYC are completely free! Visit Rockefeller Center to see the iconic Christmas tree, stroll through Central Park, and enjoy the elaborate holiday window displays along Fifth Avenue.

You’ll also want to check out the light show at Saks Fifth Avenue. It’s a holiday highlight that won’t cost you a dime.

Just across the street from Saks Fifth Avenue is St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

This beautiful church welcomes visitors even when Mass is being held.

The stained glass windows and the nativity scene are two New York Christmas decorations you won’t want to miss when you are here.

For a small donation, light a candle and pray at one of the many locations scattered throughout the church.

Check the calendar of events for your dates. There are often choirs scheduled to perform at Christmastime.

Holiday Window Displays

Seeing all the store windows on 5th Avenue is what most people think of when visiting New York City during the Christmas season.

Don’t miss the unbelievable holiday store windows!

Stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s, Bergdorf Goodman, and Bloomingdale’s go all out with incredible decorations that will blow your mind.

My best tip is to start your tour of the holiday windows at 59th Street near Central Park and walk down Fifth Avenue.

Keep your eyes peeled for the giant snowflakes, twinkling lights, and beautiful window scenes. It’s totally free, super festive, and a must-see for any first-time visitor!

Each year, it’s exciting to see the new holiday windows.

Christmas Trees in New York City

One of the most enchanting and budget-friendly ways to experience New York City at Christmas is by visiting the beautifully decorated Christmas trees scattered throughout the city.

Of course, the iconic Rockefeller Center tree is a must-see, with its towering height and dazzling lights, but don’t stop there.

Discover other stunning trees that are just as impressive and completely free to visit.

Take a look at the elegant New York Public Library tree, adorned with literary-themed decorations that delight book lovers.

Museums also get into the festive spirit, with The Met’s medieval-inspired tree and Neapolitan Baroque crèche being a hidden gem worth the visit.

Explore the opulent lobbies of famous hotels like The Plaza, The Peninsula, and Lotte New York Palace, each showcasing its magnificent holiday trees.

This tree is on the outdoor terrace at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel. You won’t want to miss all of their holiday decorations, including this giant Christmas tree and wreaths.

Santaland at Macy’s

Seeing Santa at the Macy’s Flagship store at Herald Square is a must when you visit New York City at Christmas, and visiting him is absolutely free. You can purchase photo packages that start at $39.99, but a purchase isn’t required.

Santa arrives at Macy’s at the end of the Thanksgiving Day Parade and will stay until January 1.

Each year, Macy’s dedicates an entire floor for Santaland, an interactive experience with festive holiday decorations. You’ll be delighted with holiday scenes as you weave your way toward pictures with Santa.

Make your reservation to see Santa when your trip dates are confirmed, since Santa’s pictures are in high demand.

Reservations can be made for up to nine people up to five days in advance. To secure a time slot on your preferred date, set an alarm for 6:30 AM EST when reservations open.

Don’t leave Macy’s without riding on the 100-year-old wooden escalators to visit the Holiday department. NYC ornaments are often discounted and make great NYC souvenirs from your trip.

Times Square

Just a short distance away from Rockefeller Center is an area that needs no introduction, Times Square.

This is a trendy space for taking Instagram photos and people-watching.

You won’t find many holiday decorations here, but there are two unique things to do here during the holidays that don’t cost a thing. These activities help you see more of New York City at Christmas on a budget.

First, look for the giant, glowing New Year’s Eve numbers on display.

Second, look for the Planet Fitness display. Here you can write personal messages on the confetti that will fall at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

How neat is it that someone can read your message as it falls from the sky?

Attend a Live Taping of a Holiday Show

Many popular talk shows are filmed in New York City. Did you know you can get free tickets through 1iota?

You can get complimentary tickets to shows like The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Live with Kelly and Mark, and what was once Fox’s Thursday Night Football show.

Going to a TV show taping in NYC is a fun and free way to spend a morning, and you might even snag some free swag.

Tickets are free, and it’s an incredible chance to see a live show and maybe spot a celebrity.

Once, my son got picked to dance on “Live with Kelly,” and my husband played football with Terry Bradshaw on set!

It’s a super fun way to make unique memories, and you never know who you might meet.

Plus, it’s totally budget-friendly! Sign up for tickets online and get ready for a morning of fun.

Free Tours by Foot is one of my best secrets to seeing New York City at Christmas on a budget. The tours are outstanding!

They offer awesome holiday tours where you pay what you can, making them extremely budget-friendly.

Just remember, “free” doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tip. If your guide is great (and they almost always are), plan on giving around $10 per person.

Don’t miss the Winter Village at Bryant Park, with its giant ice skating rink, cozy food stalls, and cute shops in tiny glass huts.

Union Square Holiday Market is full of artsy crafts and handmade stuff, and Columbus Circle Holiday Market is right at the corner of Central Park with yummy food and lots of holiday cheer.

Dining in New York City at Christmas on a Budget

New York is a foodie’s paradise, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to eat well.

To save money on food, start your day by enjoying the complimentary breakfast at your hotel, or head to a local bakery or bagel shop if breakfast is not offered. These are not only affordable but also a classic New York City experience.

Lunch can be both budget-friendly and tasty by trying out a New York-style pizza slice or a deli sandwich. You’ll find these options all over the city and can enjoy a quick meal without breaking the bank.

One of our favorite things to do is grab a slice of New York-style pizza at Joe’s Pizza while you people-watch and take in all the sights in Times Square. The slices are huge and delicious!

For budget-friendly dining, explore food halls like Chelsea Market or Urbanspace Vanderbilt, where you’ll find various delicious options at reasonable prices.

Street vendors are another great option for quick, affordable eats. Don’t leave without trying a New York hot dog or pretzel!

For a festive treat, grab a cup of hot chocolate or mulled cider from one of the holiday markets.

My Favorite App for NYC

The last thing I will share is my favorite phone app for saving money in New York City. It’s called Too Good To Go.

The app’s entire premise is to help restaurants avoid wasting good food at closing time by allowing app users to purchase it at a greatly discounted rate.

On past visits, we purchased a dozen bagels, two tubs of cream cheese, a whole box of pizza, and a bag full of pastry items for around $5 each.

The app is a great way to try new places for a fraction of the standard retail cost.

In Conclusion

There are many ways to take a New York family Christmas vacation and stay on budget.

With these money-saving tips and a little bit of planning, you can enjoy all the festive sights and sounds of the city without breaking the bank.

Remember, the holiday spirit is about more than just spending money. Take time to create memories, soak in the festive atmosphere, and enjoy the season’s magic.

Happy holidays and happy savings!
