Getting to Midtown from the Airports

Getting from JFK or La Guardia to Midtown Manhattan can be a pricey endeavor. Taxis and private cars can run close to $100 each way.

But, there are budget friendly options.

Uber Shuttle

Beginning in October 2024, budget-conscious travelers have a much more affordable option with Uber’s new $18 shuttle service.

This fixed-rate shuttle takes you directly from La Guardia to three convenient Midtown locations: Grand Central, Penn Station, and Port Authority.

From any of these spots, it’s easy to hop on the subway, grab a cab, or even walk to your hotel.

It’s a major win for saving money and time, leaving you with more in the budget to spend on all those holiday attractions waiting in NYC!

GO Airlink NYC

Another budget-friendly option is using GO Airlink, which offers shuttle service directly to your hotel in Midtown Manhattan for just $29.

While it may cost a bit more than Uber’s new shuttle, the convenience factor is worth considering, especially if you’re arriving with luggage or prefer a seamless trip straight to your hotel doorstep.

For just $11 more, you skip navigating extra cabs, the subway, or figuring out directions, which can be a lifesaver after a long flight.

This way, you can kick off your holiday adventures with zero hassle, diving right into the festive buzz of NYC!

Where to Stay in NYC at Christmas

A centrally located hotel in Midtown Manhattan is the best place to stay at Christmas. Look for a hotel in the Rockefeller Center, Times Square, or Empire State Building areas.

However, finding affordable accommodation in Midtown Manhattan can be challenging, especially during the holiday season.

My top tip? Book early or look for last-minute deals, such as Black Friday or Travel Tuesday deals, which happen the days after Thanksgiving.

Hotels in Midtown Manhattan in December can be expensive. If an affordable option isn’t available, check Hotwire to help you stay on budget.

Best NYC Hotel for Small Families

The Westin New York at Times Square

The Westin New York at Times Square is a great hotel because of its central location, friendly employees, and nice large rooms.

It is close to Times Square, but not too close to be bothered by the noise or lights. The hotel has over 800 rooms, so you likely can get an upgrade if you ask.

On a recent visit during the third week in December, we were upgraded to a corner suite with spectacular views and a massive bathroom with a separate shower and tub.

The ground floor lobby is beautifully decorated for the holidays and well-staffed.

For added safety, everyone enters the ground floor and must show their room key before heading up the escalators to the main lobby. In the main lobby, a large lounge area, TVs, and a bar offer guests magnificent common areas to relax and decompress at the end of a long day.

The hotel does have a restaurant, but you are a short ten-minute walk to several great diners in Hell’s Kitchen that serve fabulous breakfasts at great prices. Two favorites are The Galaxy Diner and Mom’s Kitchen and Bar.

Situated in the heart of Manhattan, the Westin New York Times Square truly shines as a perfect holiday getaway for small families, especially during the Christmas season.

Its prime location offers easy access to iconic New York City attractions, while its comfortable rooms provide a restful stay.

Best NYC Hotel for Large Families

Best Western Plus Hospitality House Suites

You’ll find large rooms with plenty of space at The Best Western Plus Hospitality House Suites, which offer apartment-like suites, a rare find for a Midtown Manhattan hotel.

Still close to all the holiday activities in Rockefeller Center, this location is further away from the hustle and bustle of Times Square.

Consider this hotel if you are planning a family trip to NYC on a budget.

The complimentary hot breakfast buffet is a plus to save money on a NYC Christmas trip.

Best NYC Hotel for Couples

The Time New York

Another fantastic hotel for a December stay is The Time New York Hotel in the Theater District.

The location of the hotel cannot be beaten. It is in a fantastic location!

A very short walk will take you to Radio City Music Hall, home to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The Rockefeller Christmas tree is just a bit further. Being so close to this area means you can easily enjoy the tree earlier in the morning or later in the evening when there are fewer crowds.

If you have plans to see a Broadway play, you will be thrilled with this hotel’s proximity to the major Broadway theaters.

The Time New York is a trendy boutique hotel with an obscure entrance. Serafina’s restaurant is in its lobby, and the room includes a continental breakfast and coffee/tea each morning.

The rooms are typical New York-sized rooms meaning they are small, and the bathrooms are even smaller.

Due to the size of the rooms, I would recommend this hotel for couples only.

Overall, it’s a top choice for couples in New York City over the holiday season.

Free Holiday Attractions in New York City at Christmas

One way to save money while visiting New York during the holidays is to take advantage of the many places with free attractions, like Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and the holiday displays along Fifth Avenue.

Rockefeller Center

You can visit Rockefeller Center, where the iconic New York City Christmas tree lighting celebration takes place, and its surrounding area to see the world-famous tree for free.

You’ll also want to check out the free light show at Saks Fifth Avenue, adjacent to Rockefeller Center.

This holiday highlight won’t cost you a dime. The Saks light display plays every ten minutes from 5 PM to 11 PM. The dynamic show will leave you mesmerized.

Just across the street from Saks Fifth Avenue is St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

This beautiful church allows visitors even when mass is held.

The stained glass windows and the nativity scene are two New York Christmas decorations you won’t want to miss when you are here.

For a small donation, light a candle and pray at one of the many locations scattered throughout the church.

Check the calendar of events for your dates. There are often choirs scheduled to perform at Christmas time.

Rockefeller Center Toy Stores

You won’t want to miss two store windows in Rockefeller Center: FAO Schwartz and the NYC Flagship Lego Store. Even if you don’t have kids, stroll inside these toy stores for the fun NYC holiday displays.

The LEGO Store in Rockefeller Center

Kids, young and old, enjoy the New York Christmas decorations at the New York City LEGO Store.

It is a multi-level building with extraordinary LEGO displays throughout the store. Special features include a brick lab, a mini figurine factory, and a mosaic maker.

The store delights with its over-the-top installations of New York-themed displays.  The New York Lego sets make perfect souvenirs or gifts.

FAO Schwarz is located just across from the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, one of the oldest toy stores in America.

You may recognize this store from the movie Big, where Tom Hank’s character hopped on the life-size keyboard.

You must go inside and look around, especially around the holidays when the New York Christmas decorations are in their displays.

Christmas Trees in New York City

One of the most enchanting and budget-friendly ways to experience New York City at Christmas is by visiting the beautifully decorated Christmas trees scattered throughout the city.

Of course, the iconic Rockefeller Center tree is a must-see, with its towering height and dazzling lights, but don’t stop there.

Discover other stunning trees that are just as impressive and completely free to visit.

Check out the elegant New York Public Library tree, adorned with literary-themed decorations that delight book lovers.

Museums also get into the festive spirit, with The Met’s medieval-inspired tree and Neapolitan Baroque crèche being a hidden gem worth the visit.

Explore the opulent lobbies of famous hotels like The Plaza, The Peninsula, and Lotte New York Palace, each showcasing its magnificent holiday trees.

This tree is on the outdoor terrace at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel. You won’t want to miss all of their holiday decorations, including this giant Christmas tree and wreaths.

These NYC Christmas trees add to the city’s holiday charm and provide perfect photo opportunities, making them a delightful and cost-effective way to enjoy New York City’s Christmas magic.

Times Square

Just a short distance away from Rockefeller Center is an area that needs no introduction, Times Square.

This is a trendy space for taking Instagram photos and people-watching.

You won’t find many holiday decorations here, but there are two unique things to do here during the holidays that don’t cost a thing. These activities help you see more of New York City at Christmas on a budget.

First, look for the giant, glowing New Year’s Eve numbers on display.

Second, look for the Planet Fitness display. Here you can write personal messages on the confetti that will fall at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

How neat is it that someone can read your message as it falls from the sky?

Radio City Music Hall

Radio City Music Hall in New York City at Christmas

Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes is fantastic, but tickets can be pricey.

If you’re going to splurge on one thing, this might be it—it’s that good!

To save money, try for weekday matinee tickets or check discount sites like TodayTix or StubHub for last-minute deals.

Even if you skip the show, don’t miss the giant red ornaments and twinkling lights outside.

They’re right across the street and totally free. A picture here is perfect for that holiday selfie or next year’s Christmas card!

Dining in New York City at Christmas on a Budget

By this time, you have to be hungry.

Visiting New York City during the Christmas season can be a magical experience, but to stay on budget, you must choose where you eat carefully.

To save money on food, start your day by enjoying the complimentary breakfast at your hotel, or head to a local bakery or bagel shop if breakfast is not offered. These are not only affordable but also a classic New York City experience.

Lunch can be both budget-friendly and tasty by trying out a New York-style pizza slice or a deli sandwich. You’ll find these options all over the city and can enjoy a quick meal without breaking the bank.

One of our favorite things to do is grab a slice of New York-style pizza at Joe’s Pizza while you people-watch and take in all the sights in Times Square. The slices are huge and delicious!

For budget-friendly dining, explore food halls like Chelsea Market or Urbanspace Vanderbilt, where you’ll find various delicious options at reasonable prices.

Street vendors are another great option for quick, affordable eats. Don’t leave without trying a New York hot dog or pretzel!

For a festive treat, grab a cup of hot chocolate or mulled cider from one of the holiday markets.

Christmas in New York City’s Central Park

NYC Central Park at Christmas

Central Park at Christmas is pure magic!

Take a stroll to see the snow-covered trees and cute bridges, and maybe even go ice skating at Wollman Rink.

It’s like stepping into a winter wonderland, and the best part? Walking around is free!

You’ll feel like you’re in a holiday movie.

Santaland at Macy’s

Seeing Santa at the Macy’s Flagship store at Herald Square is a must when you visit New York City at Christmas, and visiting him is completely free. You can purchase photo packages that start at $39.99, but a purchase isn’t required.

Santa arrives at Macy’s at the end of the Thanksgiving Day Parade and will stay until January 1.

Each year, Macy’s reserves an entire floor for Santaland, an interactive experience with festive holiday decorations. You’ll be delighted with holiday scenes as you weave your way toward pictures with Santa.

Make your reservation to see Santa when your trip dates are confirmed since Santa’s pictures are in high demand.

Reservations can be made for up to nine people up to five days in advance. To secure a time slot on your preferred date, set an alarm for 6:30 AM EST when reservations open.

Don’t leave Macy’s without riding on the 100-year-old wooden escalators to visit the Holiday department. NYC ornaments are usually discounted and make great souvenirs from your trip.

Want a fun and cheap way to see New York at Christmas?

Free Tours by Foot is one of my best secrets to seeing New York City at Christmas on a budget. The tours are outstanding!

They have awesome holiday tours where you pay what you can, so they’re super budget-friendly.

Just remember, “free” doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tip. If your guide is great (and they almost always are), plan on giving around $10 per person.

These tours are a fantastic way to learn cool facts and see the best holiday spots without spending a fortune!

Holiday Window Displays

Seeing all the store windows on 5th Avenue is what most people think of when visiting New York City at Christmas.

Don’t miss the unbelievable holiday store windows!

Holiday sculpture near Central Park at Christmas

Stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s, Bergdorf Goodman, and Bloomingdale’s go all out with incredible decorations that will blow your mind.

My best tip is to start your tour of the holiday windows at 59th Street near Central Park and walk down Fifth Avenue.

Keep your eyes peeled for the giant snowflakes, twinkling lights, and beautiful window scenes. It’s totally free, super festive, and a must-see for any first-time visitor!

Each year, it is so exciting to see the new holiday windows.

Holiday Markets in New York City at Christmas

Holiday markets in New York City are like little Christmas villages with shopping, food, and fun!

They pop up all over the city and are great for finding unique gifts and tasty treats.

Bryant Park NYC holiday market stalls and tree

Don’t miss the Winter Village at Bryant Park, with its giant ice skating rink, cozy food stalls, and cute shops in tiny glass huts.

Union Square Holiday Market is full of artsy crafts and handmade stuff, and Columbus Circle Holiday Market is right at the corner of Central Park with yummy food and lots of holiday cheer.

These markets are free to enter, and you can wander around, enjoy the festive vibes, and snack on holiday goodies without spending much.

It’s a great way to soak up the Christmas spirit without blowing your budget!

Attend a Live Taping of a Holiday Show

Many popular talk shows are filmed in New York City. Did you know you can get free tickets through 1iota?

You can get complimentary tickets to shows like The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Live with Kelly and Mark, and what was once Fox’s Thursday Night Football show.

Live with Kelly set in NYC at Christmas

Going to a TV show taping in NYC is a fun and free way to spend a morning, and you might even snag some free swag.

Tickets are free, and it’s an incredible chance to see a live show and maybe spot a celebrity.

Once, my son got picked to dance on “Live with Kelly,” and my husband played football with Terry Bradshaw on set!

It’s a super fun way to make unique memories, and you never know who you might meet.

Plus, it’s totally budget-friendly! Sign up for tickets online and get ready for a morning of fun.

My Favorite App for NYC

The last thing I will share is my favorite phone app for saving money in New York City. It’s called Too Good To Go.

The app’s whole premise is to help restaurants avoid tossing good food at closing time by allowing app users to purchase the food at a greatly discounted rate.

On past visits, we purchased a dozen bagels, two tubs of cream cheese, a whole box of pizza, and a bag full of pastry items for around $5 each.

The app is a great way to try new places for a fraction of the standard retail cost.

In Conclusion

There are many ways to take a New York family Christmas vacation and stay on budget.

With these money-saving tips and a little bit of planning, you can enjoy all the festive sights and sounds of the city without breaking the bank.

Remember, the holiday spirit is about more than just spending money. Take time to create memories, soak in the festive atmosphere, and enjoy the season’s magic.

Happy holidays and happy savings!
