Best Books for Summer Flights

Summer vacation is the perfect opportunity to catch up on all the reading you’ve been meaning to do. Here are some recommendations for the best light-hearted books to read on a plane.

28 Summers by Elin Hildebrand

28 Summers is one of my favorite books by Elin Hildebrand, who also wrote the best-sellers The Hotel Nantucket and Summer of ’69.

The story is set on Nantucket and follows the life of Mallory Blessing and her 28-year affair with Jake McCloud.

Mallory and Jake meet through Mallory’s brother Cooper, Jake’s fraternity brother. After a Labor Day bachelor party for Cooper at Mallory’s newly inherited Nantucket cottage goes awry, Mallory and Jake begin a “same time next year” romance that continues for one weekend per year for 28 summers.

It’s an easy read and one that will be hard to put down when your flight lands!

Their story is bittersweet and beautiful. Every page took me on a journey that made me feel like I was right there with Mallory and Jake.

This author will have you dreaming of summers on the island of Nantucket.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

For a hilarious read, pick up Christina Lauren’s The Unhoneymooners.

The story follows Olive Torres, twin sister to bride-to-be Ami, and Ethan Thomas, brother to the groom, Dane.

Olive and Ethan find themselves the only two wedding party guests who didn’t succumb to a wedding buffet-born illness.

Rather than lose an all-expense-paid honeymoon, the two nemeses decide to take their siblings’ honeymoon together.

The author’s descriptive writing had me in tears from laughing. This is a light-hearted book that will make your flight quite enjoyable.

One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London

If you are a fan of The Bachelorette type shows, you will like the One to Watch.

It’s a light, easy romance read about Bea, a plus-size blogger and influencer chosen to be the next reality tv star.

The highs and lows of the story leave you, as the reader, engaged and rooting for Bea.

Find out if she finds her true love.

“Whatever you decide to do, make sure it makes you happy.”

Paulo Coelho

Best Love-Story Books for Flights

Of course, you could stick with a classic love-story like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but a more modern day book might be just what you need to pass the time.

With so many different books to choose from, it may be difficult to choose one. That’s why I’ve created this list of my favorite love-story airplane books to read on vacation.

Enjoy!

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

I love the way Colleen Hoover tells this love story.

The story follows Lily, a once small-town girl living and thriving in Boston.

Lily reflects on her life by periodically rereading her journal entries, which, interestingly, she writes to Ellen DeGeneres.

Hoover writes brilliantly about the turmoil and trauma of domestic abuse.

She will have you rooting for Lily to succeed, laughing, and crying as Lily’s new and old relationships collide.

You will reach for the next book in the series, It Starts With Us, to find out what happens next.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This New York Times best-seller tells the story of Evelyn Hugo, a hugely popular and successful actress who, now in her seventies, seeks out a novice writer, Monique, to write her life story.

A surprising love story emerges through Hugo’s recollection of her life.

It’s not until the end that the reader discovers why Monique is chosen to write Hugo’s life story and potentially make millions from the book.

Rumored to be loosely based on Elizabeth Taylor’s life story, this book had me captivated until the end.

It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey

Ladies, this book is spicy!

Piper Bellinger is a spoiled, rich girl living it up in Los Angeles until she goes too far with one of her party-girl antics.

This time her step-dad won’t let her off so easy, and she is sent to live in her deceased father’s hometown in Washington.

You will love seeing Piper grow up, fall in love, and learn about her roots in this steamy love story.

The spin-off story, Hook, Line, and Sinker is just as good!

Best Books That Inspired Netflix Movies & Shows

Curious about which books inspired some of your favorite shows and titles from Netflix? Check out this list to find out!

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

I love this book. This story, set off the North Carolina coast, is about a young girl left to survive alone. You follow her trials, tribulations, and triumphs.

The book has a great but surprising ending.

This is a story that will leave you hooked until it is over.

A movie based on the book is available on Netflix, but trust me, you’ll want to read the book first.

Perhaps read the book on your first flight and watch the Netflix version on your return flight.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

The novel tells the story of a book club formed during World War II.

The war has just ended and author Juliet Ashton is searching for a new novel idea when a letter arrives from Dawsey Adams, one of the book club members who writes to her looking for help.

The book is told in letter format through correspondence between Juliet and the Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society book club members.

As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the characters are resilient and determined to find hope in even the worst situations.

If you love historical fiction, you will love this book.

An Offer from a Gentleman by Julia Quinn

An Offer from a Gentleman by Julia Quinn is the third story in the Bridgerton series made famous by the Netflix series by the same name.

The story follows the second oldest Bridgerton son, Benedict Bridgerton.

The beginning parallels a typical Cinderella story but soon develops into a familiar Bridgerton love story between Benedict and Sophie.

This book is a perfect story for your next flight.

The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

Laura Dave’s, The Last Thing He Told Me is a mystery thriller that follows Hannah as she tries to make sense of her new husband’s disappearance.

Readers soon discover Owen has gone missing after the feds raided his tech company for suspicions of fraud.

Hannah is left to raise Owen’s typical teenage daughter, Bailey. The two set off to uncover secrets from Owen’s past that reveal secrets surrounding Bailey’s childhood as well.

A series based on the book is now on AppleTV, starring Jennifer Garner.

“Books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn’t carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.”

Stephen King

Mystery Books for Your Next Flights

Grab one of these mystery books for a fun journey aboard your next flight.

The Golden Couple by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

The Golden Couple grabs your attention from the beginning and holds it until the very end.

I can usually guess the ending of a story, but not this one.

Avery, a therapist with an unusual counseling style, takes on what appears to be the perfect couple, Marissa and Matthew Bishop.

As Avery helps the Bishops through deception and infidelity, she finds moments from her own life intermingled with this golden couple.

The story’s complexity and unforeseen twists will keep you entertained, and why it’s the book you should read on your next vacation.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I wasn’t sure I would like The Inheritance Games because I thought it might be too young. It is, after all, listed as Young Adult Fiction.

I love the Harry Potter books, which are also in this same category, so I thought I would try it.

Honestly, I didn’t like it; I loved it!

The story is the first in a series of three books. The series includes The Hawthorne Legacy, and the newest release, The Final Gambit.

It follows Avery Grambs, a typical teenager who suddenly and mysteriously inherits a fortune, making her one of the wealthiest people in the world.

Through a series of puzzles, games, and twists, readers think they have solved the mystery of her inheritance, only to discover that there is more to the story.

The book is easy and will keep your attention on a long flight.

I liked it so much, I already read the second book in the series and have ordered the third.

I hope you enjoy them as well!

The Maid: A Novel by Nita Prose

If you are a fan of Agatha Christie novels, you will enjoy reading The Maid.

This murder mystery by Nita Prose will have you rooting for the quirky main character, hotel maid Molly, as you dive deeper into the story.

Molly can’t catch a break as she is drawn into the mishaps at the hotel.

The plot thickens as this loveable main character is accused of murder.

I love the way Prose ends the story.

This is an easy-to-read book that you won’t want to put down when your flight lands.

These are some of my favorite books, chosen with the hope that you might find something to enjoy. I hope that whichever airplane books you choose to bring along on your next trip, they will keep you entertained and help pass the time. Happy flying!
