Best Area to Stay in New York at Christmas

The holiday season in the city is bustling with so much to do, including traditional tourist sights, holiday decorations, and events. To make the most of your time, choose your hotel location wisely.

A centrally located hotel in Midtown Manhattan is the best place to stay at Christmas. Look for a hotel in the Rockefeller Center, Times Square, or Empire State Building areas.

Most holiday sights and decorations are within a suitable walking distance of these areas, and these areas have plenty of subway stations nearby.

Hotels in Midtown Manhattan in December can be expensive. If an affordable option isn’t available, check Hotwire to help stay on budget.

Best NYC Hotel for Small Families

The Westin New York at Times Square

The Westin New York at Times Square is a great hotel because of its central location, friendly employees, and nice large rooms.

It is close to Times Square, but not too close to be bothered by the noise or lights. The hotel has over 800 rooms, so you likely can get an upgrade if you ask.

On a recent visit during the third week in December, we were upgraded to a corner suite with spectacular views and a huge bathroom with a separate shower and tub.

The ground floor lobby is beautifully decorated for the holidays and well-staffed.

For added safety, everyone enters on the ground floor and must show their room key before heading up the escalators to the main lobby. In the main lobby, a large lounge area, TVs, and a bar offer guests magnificent common areas to relax and decompress at the end of a long day.

The hotel does have a restaurant, but you are a short ten-minute walk to several great diners in Hell’s Kitchen that serve fabulous breakfasts at great prices. Two of our favorites are The Galaxy Diner and Mom’s Kitchen and Bar.

The Westin New York at Times Square

Situated in the heart of Manhattan, the Westin New York Times Square truly shines as a perfect holiday getaway for small families, especially during the Christmas season.

Its prime location offers easy access to iconic New York City attractions, while its comfortable rooms provide a restful stay.

Best NYC Hotel for Large Families

Best Western Plus Hospitality House Suites

The Best Western Plus Hospitality House Suites offers apartment-like suites. They are large rooms with plenty of space for a large family, which is rare for a Midtown Manhattan hotel.

Still close to all the holiday activities in Rockefeller Center, this location is further away from the hustle and bustle of Times Square.

Consider this hotel if you are traveling with children.

The complimentary hot breakfast buffet is a plus for staying on a budget.

Best Western Plus Hospitality House Suites excels in location, comfort, and family-focused services.

Its large rooms and outstanding hospitality make it a favored choice for families seeking a memorable Christmas getaway in bustling New York City.

Best NYC Hotel for Couples

The Time New York

Another fantastic hotel for a December stay is The Time New York Hotel in the Theater District.

The location of the hotel cannot be beaten. It is in a fantastic location!

A very short walk will take you to Radio City Music Hall, home to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The Rockefeller Christmas tree is just a bit further. Being so close to this area means you can easily enjoy the tree earlier in the morning or later in the evening when there are fewer crowds.

If you have plans to see a Broadway play, you will be thrilled with this hotel’s proximity to the major Broadway theaters.

The Time New York is a trendy boutique hotel with an obscure entrance. Serafina’s restaurant is in its lobby, and the room includes a continental breakfast and coffee/tea each morning.

The rooms are typical New York-sized rooms meaning they are small, and the bathrooms are even smaller.

Due to the size of the rooms, I would recommend this hotel for couples only.

The Time New York

Time New York Hotel is perfect for couples seeking an enchanting Christmas in the city.

Its outstanding location near Times Square allows easy access to festive attractions.

The rooms radiate sophistication, offering elegant comfort. The hotel’s Christmas ambiance enhances romance while attentive staff ensures a memorable holiday.

Overall, it’s a top choice for couples in New York City over the holiday season.

What to See at Christmas in New York City

There are so many delightful places to visit in NYC at Christmas. I have found that you can see plenty in four days, which is why I created this four day NY Christmas itinerary. These are fun activities in NYC for couples or families.

Day One in NYC

Christmas in New York City’s Rockefeller Center

On the first day of your Christmas in NY itinerary, head to Rockefeller Center, the hub for most holiday events.

Can we talk about a New York Christmas without leading with the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree? One of the world’s most iconic holiday symbols is free to visit.

The Christmas tree lighting takes place on November 29, and the tree stays lit from 5 AM to 12 AM daily until January 13, except for Christmas Day, when the tree stays lit for twenty-four hours.

I recommend visiting both during the day and evening for two different experiences.

The Channel Gardens

While in the Rockefeller Center, you won’t want to miss other New York Christmas decorations, like The Channel Gardens. These gardens feature beautiful flowers and water fountains that line the way to the tree with the help of twelve lighted angels.

Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting
Every NYC visit begins with a visit to Rockefeller Center to see the world-famous Christmas tree.

Trip Tip: Make a reservation for a professional to take your picture with the tree from this area. There is a photo station set up in the Channel Gardens. The cost this year is $40 for a digital print package. It is worth it. We didn’t do this on our first trip, and we were disappointed when we got home and found our pictures did not turn out great.

The Rink at Rockefeller Center

Located just below the tree is the Rockefeller Center Ice Rink. This is one of the smallest outdoor ice rinks, but how can you beat skating under this iconic tree?

Trip Tip: Make your ice skating rink reservation for the best times in advance.

Rockefeller Center Chalets

New in 2021 was the addition of the cozy chalets alongside the ice rink. These individual heated and cozy houses are made to resemble ski chalets.

This year, the chalets are sponsored by Balsam Hill, with food and beverage service provided by Other Half Brewing. Make reservations for access to your private chalet for fifty minutes.

Coach Chalets in Rockefeller Center NYC

If online reservations are not available, some walk-up times may be open. On our visit, we walked right up without waiting around 11 AM on the day we visited.

The chalets make the perfect place to rest, recharge, and warm up on cold December days. Plus, they give you an amazing front-row view of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Don’t leave the Rockefeller Center area without seeing the New York Christmas decorations at Saks Fifth Avenue. The Saks theatrical light show is magical. When the music begins, you surely won’t be able to miss it. It plays every ten minutes from 5 PM to 11 PM.

Trip Tip: Most people try to get close to the street when the music starts. If you stand back by the Channel Gardens, you can see the whole building without rubbing shoulders with the crowds at the front.

New York Christmas Decorations at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

One way to save money while visiting New York during the holidays is to take advantage of the many places with free attractions.

Just across the street from Saks Fifth Avenue is St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

It is a beautiful church that allows visitors even when mass is held.

The stained glass windows and the nativity scene are two New York Christmas decorations you won’t want to miss when you are here.

For a small donation, light a candle and pray at one of the many locations scattered throughout the church.

Check the calendar of events for your dates. There are often choirs scheduled to perform at Christmas time.

Top of the Rock Observation Deck

New York has several observation decks that take you high above the skyscrapers to witness the city’s beauty in winter. The Top of the Rock and the Empire State Building are two of the most popular observation decks.

The Top of the Rock is an excellent choice because not only can you see the New York skyline, but you can also see Central Park from the top. There are both indoor and outdoor observation decks to view New York Christmas decorations.

The Top of the Rock is one of the many places on a CityPASS ticket. CityPASS tickets have a list of attractions throughout the city where you can gain admission for a discounted price.

The New York CityPASS is a great way to save money if you plan to see other NYC attractions.

Fifth Avenue Store Windows

Seeing all the store windows on Fifth Avenue is what most people think of when visiting New York City at Christmas.

Two store windows in Rockefeller Center you won’t want to miss are FAO Schwartz and the NYC Flagship Lego Store. Even if you don’t have kids, take a stroll inside these toy stores for the fun NYC holiday displays.

The LEGO Store in Rockefeller Center

Kids, young and old, enjoy the New York Christmas decorations at the New York City LEGO Store.

It is a multi-level building with extraordinary LEGO displays throughout the store. Special features include a brick lab, a mini figurine factory, and a mosaic maker.

The store delights with its over-the-top installations of New York-themed displays.  The New York Lego sets make perfect souvenirs or gifts.

Located just across from the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is FAO Schwarz, one of the oldest toy stores in America.

You may recognize this store from the movie Big, where Tom Hank’s character hopped on the life-size keyboard.

You must go inside and look around, especially around the holidays when the New York Christmas decorations are in their displays.

Before leaving this area, you will want to stop by the Lotte New York Palace Hotel to see their dazzling outdoor terrace tastefully decorated for the holidays with a giant Christmas tree and wreaths.

Times Square

Just a short distance away from Rockefeller Center is an area that needs no introduction, Times Square.

This is a trendy space for taking Instagram photos and people-watching.

You won’t find a lot of holiday decorations here, but there are two unique things to do here during the holidays that don’t cost a thing, helping you see more of New York City at Christmas on a budget.

First, look for the giant, glowing New Year’s Eve numbers on display.

Second, look for the Planet Fitness display. Here you can write personal messages on the confetti that will fall at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

How neat is it that someone can read your message as it falls from the sky?

Iconic New York Food

By this time, you have to be hungry.

Visiting New York City during the Christmas season can be a magical experience, but to stay on budget, you must choose where you eat carefully.

To save money on food, start your day by enjoying the complimentary breakfast at your hotel, or head to a local bakery or bagel shop if breakfast is not offered. These are not only affordable but also a classic New York City experience.

Lunch can be both budget-friendly and tasty by trying out a New York-style pizza slice or a deli sandwich. You’ll find these options all over the city and can enjoy a quick meal without breaking the bank.

One of our favorite things to do is grab a slice of New York-style pizza at Joe’s Pizza while you people-watch and take in all the sights in Times Square. The slices are huge and delicious!

When it comes to a sit-down dinner with family portions, consider dining at Carmine’s in Times Square. This Italian restaurant is known for its generous servings meant to be shared. Ordering a few dishes for the table can be a cost-effective way to enjoy a hearty and delicious meal together.

For dessert, visit Juniors in Times Square for a slice of New York’s famous cheesecake.

Radio City Music Hall

For your evening plans, purchase tickets to see the Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular with the Radio City Rockettes. Snap some photos in front of the large fountain and colorful ornaments before heading back to the hotel for the evening.

Radio City Music Hall is best known as home to the Rockettes and The Christmas Spectacular.

If you can see only one show while you are in New York during the holidays, then this is the show you need to see. Everyone in our family, young and old, enjoyed it.

Day Two in NYC

Christmas in New York City’s Central Park

You may want to sleep in today for day two of my Christmas in New York itinerary. You will be outside enjoying New York City’s Central Park today and spending the evening enjoying the festive 5th Ave holiday window displays.

Holiday activities abound in the Central Park area. The park is free to visit, making it a budget-friendly activity.

After filling up on breakfast at your hotel or one of the diners mentioned above, make your way to Columbus Circle either on foot or via the subway.

At Columbus Circle, walk around the Columbus Circle Outdoor Holiday Market. Like European holiday markets, the Holiday Market at Columbus Circle has many food options, warm drinks, music, and fabulous kiosks filled with NYC gifts ready to be purchased.

Central Park tour

When you have finished shopping, head toward Central Park.

There are several options for today based on what you want to do.

Take a horse and carriage ride, book a pedicab tour, or take a Central Park TV & Movie Sites walking tour to explore all the places in the park where movies and t.v. shows have been filmed.

An Affordable Lunch at The Burger Joint

After visiting Central Park, have lunch at a unique New York City burger spot.

Make your way to the Thompson Central Park Hotel to find the Burger Joint. No, that’s its name, The Burger Joint.

This dive is hidden behind a huge black curtain in the lobby of this swanky hotel. You will think you are in the wrong place to grab a burger but trust me.

A burger and fries at the Burger Joint will be one of the best budget meals you have in New York City at Christmas.

Santaland at Macy’s

Seeing Santa at the Macy’s Flagship store at Herald Square is a must when you visit New York City at Christmas, and visiting him is completely free. You can purchase photo packages that start at $39.99, but a purchase isn’t required.

Santa arrives at Macy’s at the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and he will be there until January 1.

Each year, Macy’s reserves an entire floor for Santaland, which is an interactive experience with festive holiday decorations. You’ll be delighted with holiday scenes as you weave your way toward pictures with Santa.

Make your reservation to see Santa as soon as your trip dates are confirmed since Santa’s pictures are in high demand.

Reservations can be made for up to nine people up to five days in advance. To secure a time slot on your preferred date, set an alarm for 6:30 AM EST. when reservations open.

Don’t leave Macy’s without riding on the 100-year-old wooden escalators to visit the Holiday department. NYC ornaments are usually discounted and make great souvenirs from your trip.

Holiday Lights Tour

Free Tours by Foot is one of my best secrets to seeing New York City at Christmas on a budget. The tours are outstanding!

Tonight, sign up for the Holiday Lights tour. Make sure to book your tour before you arrive. For a $3 per person donation to Toys for Tots, these popular tours guide you to the best window displays in NYC. You won’t find a better deal.

NYC Public Library at Christmas
New York City Christmas Tours

The tour typically meets in front of the New York City Public Library in Midtown. You are in the right place when you see the giant lion statues.

Trip Tip: Find Patience and Fortitude, the two lion statues located in front of the library building. They are festively decorated during the holidays.

If the library is open, take a look around while you wait for your evening tour of holiday window displays to begin.

The store windows in New York are a must-see at Christmas. The stores go over and beyond in creating a magical experience for shoppers and pedestrians.

Bryant Park Winter Village

The tour will begin as you head toward Bryant Park’s Bank of America Winter Village.

The Bryant Park Winter Village includes a holiday market with shopping kiosks and a food hall with many unique eats and treats.

The Village includes outdoor tables and chairs set up as places to sit and relax, listen to music and enjoy being in NYC.

You won’t spend much time in this area during the Holiday Lights tour, so put it on your list of places to see on days three and four if you want to return.

The food market and kiosks have many places that sell breakfast, so beginning your day here, when it is less crowded, is a good idea. The morning is also a great time to get a picture with Santa in front of the tree without a wait.

Day Three in NYC

Full Day Tour at Christmas in New York City

You may be exhausted after your first two days in New York City. Despite looking small on a map, it is easy to log many steps.

If you are ready to keep going, I suggest a private, luxury tour of the city for day three. This sounds expensive, but it is surprisingly affordable for a full-day tour, including a harbor tour.

If you are a first-time visitor to New York City, you don’t want to miss iconic landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, or the 911 Memorial.

I recommend using High-Quality Tours. This company is amazing. You will feel like a VIP on their full-day tour, plus you will have to do little walking since you are transported in their private luxury vehicle.

The Best NYC Christmas Tours explains everything you need to know about other equally affordable New York tours.

Day Four in New York City

Free Tours

On your last day in New York City, you should choose what you want to do.

I suggest that you begin by looking at the many free tours offered by Free Tours by Foot.

I love using their tours because of the affordability but also because they are excellent guides.

New York City is not a city you want to navigate alone, at least not on your first visit. These are a few of the tours we have taken and loved.

Brooklyn Bridge

You can choose a walking tour across the Brooklyn Bridge, where you will get some fantastic photos.

Neighborhood or Holiday Market Food Tour

Discovering the culinary delights of New York City through a neighborhood or holiday market food tour is not just a feast for the taste buds but also a budget-friendly adventure.

Guided by an expert, you’ll visit one of the many charming neighborhoods or festive holiday markets. It’s a delightful way to explore on a budget while indulging in the season’s festive spirit.

The pizza, SoHo/Little Italy, and Greenwich Village tours are all wonderful. You might find your favorite food spot in NYC, as we have. We don’t go to NYC without stopping at Ferrara’s and Dipalo’s in Little Italy now.

For a family-friendly food tour, consider this NYC Holiday Market and Food Tour, which is great for the whole family. You’ll enjoy exploring the Union Square Holiday Market with a local tour guide while you enjoy sampling kid-friendly treats.

Along with delicious food, you’ll also discover interesting facts about the neighborhoods and see their holiday decorations.

Shopping in Chinatown

Free Tours by Foot even has shopping tours through Second-Hand and Vintage stores. Or, you can venture out alone, perhaps scoring a knock-off in Chinatown.

I think it looks close enough to the real thing. What about you?

NYC Public Library

Even if you don’t like to read, you will still want to walk in and see the New York City Public Library’s main branch in Manhattan if you didn’t have an opportunity already.

It is right behind the Bryant Park Winter Village.

Special exhibits are typically displayed, and the gift shop is pretty neat. Plus, you won’t want to miss their Christmas tree in the lobby. The entrance is free.

Summit One Vanderbilt

Summit One Vanderbilt is one of New York City’s newest skyscrapers. It is a unique experience of an observation deck taken to the next level.

If you don’t fear heights, this experience will be exhilarating with the glass decks and panoramic views.

Grand Central Station

Head down 42nd Street, and you will find Grand Central Station.

I was surprised to find it was more than just a terminal.

There are more than 50 shops and over 30 places to eat.

This iconic building is enormous. I recommend just standing at the top of the stairs and taking it all in. The architecture is impressive.

Look for the information booth clock and the whispering gallery. During Christmas, there is a Grand Holiday fair that has local vendors.

See a Free Show

Many popular talk shows are filmed in New York City. Did you know you can get free tickets through 1iota?

You can get complimentary tickets to shows like Jimmy Fallon, Live with Kelly and Ryan, and what was once Fox’s Thursday Night Football show.

When we were guests at the Live with Kelly show, my son was chosen as the in-studio trivia dancer and was on TV that morning. Norah Jones, the musical guest, serenaded us, and overall we had a fun time.

We attended the last taping of Fox’s Thursday Night Football show and were given free NFL swag, like blankets and coffee mugs. We got to see Howie Long, Michael Strahan, and Ryan Reynolds up close, and my husband even got to play catch with Terry Bradshaw.

These are special memories in New York that don’t cost a thing.

My Favorite App for NYC

The last thing I will share with you is my favorite phone app for saving money in New York City. It’s called Too Good To Go.

The whole premise behind the app is to help restaurants avoid tossing good food at closing time by allowing app users to purchase the food at a greatly discounted rate.

On past visits, we purchased a dozen bagels, two tubs of cream cheese, a whole box of pizza, and a bag full of pastry items for around $5 each.

The app is a great way to try new places for a fraction of the normal retail cost.

In Conclusion

There are so many ways to see New York City at Christmas and stay on budget.

These ideas for a 4 day New York City itinerary will provide you with many ways to explore this fabulous city during the holidays.

Having been back to New York City during the holidays several times now, I have learned many things, but the most important thing I have learned is visiting New York City at Christmas is possible even with a limited budget.
