Flying into Paris with a layover is both exciting and a little daunting. You’re so close to one of the most iconic cities in the world, but you’re on a tight schedule.

Should you leave the airport or play it safe? When I found myself with a seven-hour layover at Charles de Gaulle (the CDG airport), I decided to go for it.

I had just flown through the night from Dallas, Texas, landing at 8:15 AM.

Jet leg was creeping in, and my internal clock was screaming that it’s 1:00 in the morning.

But, instead of dragging through the airport for the next seven hours, I decided to have an adventure and see Paris for the very first time.

And let me tell you, booking a Paris layover tour was the best decision I could have made.

My Plan for a Paris Layover

When planning our three week European trip, including a nine night Adriatic cruise, I had a lot on my plate. The thought of planning one more thing, especially for a layover, was more than I wanted to think about.

However, I knew I didn’t want to try and beat jet lag by staying awake in an airport for seven hours while waiting for our next flight.

Having never traveled internationally to Europe before, I didn’t know if I could manage to leave the airport to see Paris with only seven hours.

Between language barriers, navigating foreign transportation, timing, luggage storage, and logistics, how would it all even work?

I knew about the train station in CDG with an RER train to Disneyland Paris, but without kids in tow, Disney didn’t rank high on my list of places to see on this visit.

There was also the possibility of taking a taxi into Paris, but I wouldn’t begin to know where to tell it to take us.

That’s when inspiration struck. Why couldn’t I find a tour guide to show me Paris?

Having a personal guide would mean zero planning on my part.

Eiffel Tower

No Paris visit—no matter how brief—is complete without seeing the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Samuel expertly navigated the crowds, snapping photos for us and making sure we had plenty of time to gawk at the Iron Lady.

The Olympics’ security kept us from getting as close as usual, but even from a distance, the Eiffel Tower took my breath away.

Champs Élysées

One of my favorite things on our Paris layover was to stroll along the world-famous avenue, the Champs Élysées. Soaking in its glamour and energy, I suddenly felt a little underdressed.

Regardless, Samuel pointed out its significance as the finishing line for the Tour de France. Imagining the thrill of cyclists crossing this iconic street during the race added an exciting layer to the experience.

Of course, seeing the luxury shops and bustling cafés made it feel quintessentially Parisian.

Palais de Chaillot and the River Seine

Another exceptional moment on our Paris layover, was our stop at the Palais de Chaillot. I had no idea this viewing platform even existed.

From the Palais de Chaillot, we enjoyed another unparalleled view of the Eiffel Tower.

Standing on the terrace and soaking in the breathtaking scenery was unforgettable.

Afterward, we tried to take a peaceful walk along the River Seine. To soak in the beauty of the city and watch the boats drift by screams Parisian.

But once again, the Olympics’ security foiled this plan and kept this from happening. I know this frustrated our guide, but we didn’t mind. We were still able to see plenty of Paris.

Delicious Detours

By this point, we needed fuel—and coffee. What’s Paris without its food?

We ducked into a cozy café in the famous Place du Trocadéro for what can only be described as the most heavenly croissant of my life.

Flaky, buttery, and still warm, this croissant was pure magic.

Jet lag? What jet lag?

Window Shopping

After a quick break, we cruised by landmarks like the Louis Vuitton store, which was fun to see even from the outside. While I wasn’t in the market for a handbag, soaking up the Parisian elegance was a treat.

Samuel even worked in a quick macaron stop at an adorable Parisian pharmacy because what’s a trip to Paris without macarons?

Time to Breathe, Time to Dash

Was seven hours enough time to leisurely explore Paris? Absolutely not.

Did I see the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame, or Montmartre? No, but seven hours was enough time to fall in love with the city and left me hungry for more.

Our time in Paris was over in a flash, and Samuel delivered us back to CDG with time to spare for our flight to Venice.

The best part of the entire day was I didn’t have to stress about anything. I didn’t worry about missing my connection, storing our luggage, or navigating unfamiliar transportation.

I sat back, enjoyed seeing a new city, and let someone else worry about scheduling and time.

Would I Do It Again? In a Heartbeat
