Ogunquit, Maine

As my sisters and I continued our five day New England road trip, our first stop was in Ogunquit.

Ogunquit, which means “beautiful place by the sea” in the Abenaki language, absolutely lives up to its name. At just four square miles, it packs a lot into its petite frame.

Things to Do in Ogunquit

One of the highlights of my visit to Ogunquit was walking the Marginal Way.

The Marginal Way is a picturesque easy paved cliffside path along the ocean that stretches about a mile and a quarter.

It connects the Ogunquit Center to Perkins Cove, a quaint harbor filled with galleries, shops, and seafood shacks.

Along the way, I stopped to sit on the benches sprinkled along the path, soaking in the views of waves crashing against the rocky coastline.

The main reason for staying overnight in Ogunquit was a scenic harbor cruise to see the famous New England lighthouses.

I recommend taking a scenic harbor cruise with Finestkind Cruises. As you can see, the lighthouses and other sailboats in the water are spectacular.

Ogunquit Beaches

The town’s main beach is Ogunquit Beach. It’s famous for its soft, sandy shore that stretches for over three miles. The beach is family-friendly, with lifeguards on duty throughout the summer.

A quieter alternative to Ogunquit Beach is Footbridge Beach. This beach is accessible via a picturesque wooden footbridge. There are public restrooms and snack shacks in the summer.

It offers fishing, sailing, and boat tours from its harbor in Perkins Cove.

Coastal Town of Kennebunkport, Maine

After visiting Ogunquit, we headed north to Kennebunkport, a short 20-minute drive away.

There are several stops along the way, including a fabulous nursery called Wallingford Farm and other roadside shops. I found a classic New England buoy birdhouse here that is one of my favorite souvenirs.

Once we arrived in Kennebunkport, we headed straight to Dock Square in the downtown area.

Dock Square is bustling with shops, galleries, and restaurants.

I loved strolling through the streets, but the real highlight was the drive out to Walker’s Point, home to the Bush Compound.

The view of the Atlantic here is spectacular, and there’s even a pull-off to snap a photo.

The Bush Compound, where our 41st President, George H. W. Bush, and his family stay in the summer, jets out to the water’s edge at Walker’s Point at the end of a residential neighborhood.

The flag flying indicates the Bush family is in residence.

You cannot get too close, but there is a small spot to pull off to the side of the road for pictures.

We stopped, walked to the water’s edge, took pictures, waved, and then went back to town to shop.

Kennebunkport’s Beaches

The town has two main beaches, Goose Rocks Beach and Colony Beach.

Goose Rocks Beach is a serene, wide stretch of sandy coastline surrounded by picturesque homes and gentle waves. It’s perfect for couples seeking peace, as it’s less crowded than Ogunquit’s beaches.

Colony Beach is a small, rocky beach near the Kennebunk River inlet. While not ideal for sunbathing, it offers stunning views and is great for a short visit or photo opportunities.

Kennebunkport is an excellent choice for couples seeking a romantic getaway.

The town’s upscale accommodations, fine dining options, and serene atmosphere make it a haven for those looking to unwind in style.

The town is walkable, with restaurants and shops that are easy to access, but it is crowded.

Parking in Kennebunkport is fairly straightforward. There is a large free lot within walking distance of the shops, but again it can get crowded.

Comparing the Two Coastal Towns

These two towns are just 11 miles apart, making them perfect for day trips to one another.

You could spend the morning exploring Ogunquit’s Marginal Way and the afternoon shopping in Kennebunkport’s Dock Square.

The best time to visit Ogunquit and Kennebunkport is late spring through early fall.

I visited in late summer when the weather was warm, and the crowds had thinned out.

Fall is also stunning, with vibrant foliage adding to the charm.

How to Get There

The closest major airport is Portland International Jetport (PWM), about a 40-minute drive from Ogunquit and slightly longer to Kennebunkport.

From there, you can rent a car and easily navigate the coastal roads.

If you’re coming from Boston Logan International Airport, the drive takes around 1.5 hours.
