Planning Your 2 Day Itinerary for San Francisco

The great thing about a trip to San Francisco is the convenience of the nearby airports.

Three international airports are within driving distance of San Francisco: San Francisco International, Oakland International, and San Jose International.

You can also arrive in San Francisco by train, with over seventy routes to the city.

Getting Around San Francisco

San Francisco has many public transportation options, including the BART, the Muni, and the Caltrain.

You can also rent a car to get to the city, but you won’t likely need it once you are there unless you want to venture out.

Which transportation option will be decided by which airport you fly into. We rented a car only because we flew into Oakland and then headed out to Sonoma wine country after our San Francisco trip.

If you rent a car, you must pay for parking, so include anywhere from $40-$75 per day in your budget. I have been successful in renting affordable cars from Hotwire. I used it most recently for a same-day car rental in Seattle.

Don’t rule out public transportation! If you fly into San Francisco or Oakland, the Bay Area Rapid Transit, or the BART, has service to downtown.

Accommodation Recommendations for Your 2 Days in San Francisco

I recommend staying in Union Square in downtown San Francisco. This centrally located spot is within walking distance of some of the best San Francisco sights.

Union Square boasts an impressive array of hotels, from luxurious accommodations to boutique gems, ensuring you’ll find the perfect place to rest and recharge after a day of adventure.

Day 1: Sights and Experiences in San Francisco

Ride the Cable Cars to Breakfast

No itinerary for San Francisco is complete without experiencing the iconic cable cars. Not only a National Historic Landmark but also a charming mode of transportation that adds a touch of nostalgia to your getaway.

As you hop aboard one of these classic vehicles, you’ll feel the excitement build as one of the last manually operated cable cars begins its journey through the city’s famous hills.

San Francisco Cable Cars

To ride the cable cars, your best bet is to go early in the morning. Head to Powell and Market Streets from the hotel around 8:30 AM. Catch a ride on the Powell-Mason car (yellow signs) down to Fisherman’s Wharf and try to beat the crowds.

Alternatively, you can take the Powell Hyde car (maroon signs) to get you closer to places like Ghirardelli Square.

The fare for a single ride is $8 per person, making it an affordable and unforgettable adventure. Use the MuniMobile app to purchase your tickets online or buy a ticket using the exact cash at a number of locations. You can find out more ticket information here.

Begin day one of your 2 day itinerary for San Francisco with a delightful breakfast at one of the local favorites, like Eight AM or Hollywood Cafe. Both are just a short walk from the cable car turnaround.

You will find the best lobster rolls at Fog Harbor Fish House, ranked by Yelp as one of the top 5 restaurants in San Francisco. The stunning views of the bay are worth a stop here.

Or, swing by Boudin Bakery for a bowl of clam chowder in one of their signature sourdough bowls. I mean, how can you not grab a sourdough loaf at the home of the original San Francisco sourdough?
