Avalon Romantic Rhine River Cruise Review: Is It Worth It?

I took my very first river cruise with Avalon Waterways and wanted to share my experience to help you decide whether you should book the same one.

A river cruise is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to see Europe. Instead of packing and unpacking in every city, you wake up in a new destination each morning. Castles drift past your window, vineyards roll across the hillsides, and charming villages appear around nearly every bend in the river.

Before booking my first Avalon Waterways river cruise, I had plenty of questions.

Was it really worth the price? Would I miss the energy of an ocean cruise? What happens if low water levels change the itinerary? And would a smaller ship start to feel… well… small after a week?

Those were all valid concerns. Up until this point, I had only sailed as an ocean cruiser.

In fact, I had just stepped off an 11-day Mediterranean cruise with Holland America Line when my husband and I boarded Avalon Waterways’ Romantic Rhine cruise from Basel to Amsterdam.

After planning our first two weeks in Europe, I wanted to end our vacation with something easier, and that is exactly what a river cruise is… easy!

I had no idea that I would enjoy river cruising as much as I did.

It isn’t perfect, and I’ll share the few things I think Avalon could improve. But after spending a week sailing the Rhine River, I finally understood why so many travelers become passionate about river cruising.

Why I Chose Avalon Waterways

This river cruise almost didn’t happen.

Originally, the plan was simple. Spend 11 days cruising the Mediterranean, then fly home.

But once in Europe, it seemed silly to cross the Atlantic without seeing more.

I began researching river cruises because I wanted a vacation that didn’t require any more planning on my part.

I wanted someone else to handle the logistics for a change.

Avalon immediately caught my attention, but not because of the itinerary.

It was the Panorama Suite.

A regular cruise balcony is small and closed off. Avalon’s is different. They replace most of the outer wall with floor-to-ceiling glass that slides open.

The thought of lying in bed while castles, vineyards, and storybook villages floated past sounded like the perfect ending to our European adventure.

Spoiler alert: it absolutely was.

River Cruising vs Ocean Cruising: They’re More Different Than I Expected

I’ll admit it.

I boarded Avalon expecting to compare everything to ocean cruising. I have taken several ocean cruises, including two to Alaska, one to Canada/New England, and two to the Mediterranean.

Would I miss having multiple restaurants?

What if the ship feels too quiet?

Would I get bored?

The funny thing is, I stopped asking those questions after the first full day.

Ocean cruises and river cruises aren’t competing vacations. They’re completely different experiences.

An ocean cruise is often about the ship as much as it is about the destinations. There are production shows, casinos, specialty restaurants, pools, and endless entertainment.

A river cruise flips that idea upside down.

The destinations become the entertainment.

Here’s how the two stack up, at a glance:

Instead of spending a sea day crossing open water, you’re sailing past castles, vineyards, and villages where people have lived for centuries. Rather than docking miles outside a city, you often walk off the ship directly into town.

One morning we woke up in France. By that afternoon, we were exploring Germany.

I didn’t miss the constant activity of an ocean ship nearly as much as I expected because every day already felt full.

Embarkation: The Easiest Cruise Check-In I’ve Ever Experienced

I’ve boarded enough cruises to know the usual rhythm: terminals, queues, paperwork, and that slightly chaotic feeling of airport security.

This wasn’t that.

Boarding Avalon couldn’t have been more different.

Although the itinerary begins in Basel, Switzerland, we actually boarded in Huningue, France, just a few miles away.

We walked onto the ship, checked in at the reception desk, picked up our room keys, and were shown to our cabin.

That was it.

The entire process took only a few minutes.

It immediately set the tone for the week ahead. Relaxed. Organized. Uncomplicated.

Our Panorama Suite: The Cabin That Sold Me on Avalon

I genuinely believe the Panorama Suite is Avalon’s signature feature.

The first morning on board, I opened the curtains before I even got out of bed.

Outside, the Rhine River quietly flowed past vineyards and small villages. I remember just lying there for a few minutes, watching Europe wake up.

It became my favorite part of every morning.

The floor-to-ceiling panoramic window completely changes the cabin’s feel. Opening the glass made the room feel bigger, brighter, and connected to whatever was happening outside.

That said, I also think it’s important to set realistic expectations.

One thing I hadn’t considered before booking was that river ships often dock side by side.

There were several times when another river ship was tied up directly next to ours. Instead of looking out at the Rhine, we were looking into someone else’s Panorama Suite only a few feet away.

It didn’t happen every day, but it happened often enough that I found myself questioning whether the premium price for the Panorama Suite is always worth it. When you’re actively sailing, the views are spectacular. When you’re docked next to another ship, those views temporarily disappear.

Another thing to keep in mind is summer insects.

One cool morning, while sailing into Amsterdam, we opened our panoramic window and enjoyed the fresh air without issue.

On warmer evenings, however, bugs quickly found their way toward the cabin lights. We learned to keep the lights off whenever the window was open. That solved the problem, but it’s something worth knowing before you travel.

Even with those minor drawbacks, I would still choose the Panorama Suite again.

How Much Does an Avalon River Cruise Cost?

I’ll leave my exact price out of this one since river cruise pricing varies so much by season, ship, and how you book.

As a general guide, standard cabins on the Romantic Rhine typically run $4,300–$4,900 per person, and Panorama Suites run $6,200–$6,800 per person for the 7-night cruise.

What’s Included on an Avalon River Cruise?

For context on what you’re paying for: your cruise fare covers your cabin, all meals, a daily guided excursion, Wi-Fi, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner.

The biggest add-on costs to budget for are flights, pre-cruise hotel nights, optional excursions, laundry (charged per item), and tips for local guides and drivers.

Because so much was already covered, I rarely thought about spending money on board. Instead of constantly deciding whether something was worth an extra fee, I could simply enjoy the experience.

That freedom made the vacation feel far more relaxing than many of the ocean cruises I’ve taken.

Life Onboard Avalon Waterways

One of the things I appreciated most was how predictable each day became.

Excursions

Each evening, our cruise director gathered everyone together for a short briefing about the next day’s schedule. We learned when excursions would depart, what the weather would be like, and exactly what to expect at each port.

The excursions Avalon includes are excellent, with top-notch guides at each port. They also provide transportation when needed.

We chose our excursions prior to sailing, but the on-board cruise director can help you make changes and answer questions, if needed.

Avalon treats guests as adults, allowing you to make your own decisions about how to spend your time in port. That said, timelines are strictly upheld.

They don’t wait for late passengers or take headcounts, and as someone who values punctuality, I absolutely loved that when they said the bus was leaving at 8:30, they meant it.

Guests are also given lightweight wired audio headsets for each tour, making it easy to hear every word your guide says.

One tiny travel hack that made our tours even more enjoyable was packing a small headphone splitter. We plugged it into the provided audio set and used our personal wireless earbuds instead of the provided wired earpieces.

Fellow Passengers

One thing that surprised me was the makeup of our fellow passengers.

Most guests were from the United States and Canada, with a handful from Australia.

That created a friendly, familiar atmosphere, and conversations naturally centered around travel. It was fun hearing where everyone had been, what destinations they loved, and where they were headed next.

Onboard Entertainment

Life on board was intentionally relaxed.

There wasn’t a packed schedule of activities competing for my attention every hour, and honestly, I didn’t miss it.

Most evenings featured local musicians, cultural performances, games, or trivia, but after walking through historic cities all day, my husband and I were usually happy to call it an early night.

Dress Code

Another surprise was the dress code—or rather, how relaxed it was.

Before boarding, I packed several nicer outfits because I assumed dinner would feel similar to an ocean cruise. Instead, most guests dressed in what I’d call “country club casual.”

Men typically wore polo shirts or collared shirts with shorts or slacks, while women wore sundresses, capris, or casual dresses. There were no formal nights, and I never once felt underdressed.

Looking back, I probably packed more dressy clothes than I needed.

Fitness Center

The fitness center is another area where expectations should be realistic. It has enough equipment for a basic workout, but with only a few machines, it doesn’t take many people before it feels crowded.

That said, Avalon does employ an adventure host on board. Our host offered morning exercise classes, power walk excursions, and biking tours.

Bicycles are also available free of charge to explore each port.

Laundry Services

We used the laundry service on Avalon since this river cruise was the final leg of our 27-day European vacation.

The service was quite efficient, as our clean laundry was returned within a day of sending it out.

Pricing is charged per item rather than as a package. However, I’d love to see Avalon introduce an optional laundry package similar to what many ocean cruise lines offer.

For someone taking only this cruise, that may not matter much. For longer trips like ours, the costs add up quickly.

Dining and Happy Hour Onboard Avalon Waterways

Breakfast

Guests can choose from a breakfast buffet, à la carte dishes, or room service for breakfast. Most days, we chose the buffet because it was quite extensive, including made-to-order omelets.

I did order the à la carte Belgian waffles one morning, and they seriously were some of the best I’ve had.

We never used room service, which is odd for us because we love it. I think having planned excursions each morning got us up and moving, so it just made sense to go to the dining room.

Lunch

For lunch, guests can choose between the buffet in the main dining room and a more casual lunch in the Panorama Lounge.

One afternoon, a barbecue lunch was served on the Sky Deck. A live musician performed as guests relaxed and ate. It was a nice change of scenery, and the barbecue was quite delicious.

If you take a full-day excursion, lunch is included.

You can also request a “to-go” lunch if you are exploring on your own.

Dinner

A four-course meal was served each evening in the main dining room and often lasted close to two hours, as guests enjoyed conversation between courses.

Local beer and wine are also included with meals, and the pours were quite generous. The servers definitely did not like to see empty glasses!

While you don’t have to join others at dinner, the tables are placed quite close together, which leads to natural conversations between nearby guests. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and the conversations we had while lingering over each course.

What stood out most was how often the menu reflected the places we were visiting. Rather than feeling generic, meals often included regional dishes and local flavors.

Alternatively, guests can find similar food items in the Panorama Lounge if they don’t want to dine in the main dining room.

Looking back, I wish we had tried the more casual dining option in the Panorama Lounge at least once, as I occasionally found myself ready for a quieter evening after a full day of touring.

Overall, meals onboard became another way to experience the regions we were traveling through.

Happy Hour

One thing I didn’t expect was just how social river cruising naturally is.

The complimentary happy hour encouraged this socialization as everyone gathered nightly in the Panorama Lounge before dinner.

Because the ship is intimate, it’s easy to get to know your fellow passengers.

This time became one of our favorite pauses in the day after returning from an excursion, freshening up, then heading to the lounge for a cocktail while the river quietly drifted past outside.

Afternoon Tea/Snacks

A proper English afternoon tea was prepared each day in the Panorama Lounge, including sandwiches, cakes, and over forty types of tea.

You can also find salty snacks in the bar area and cookies and treats in the Club Lounge throughout the day.

One tip: we didn’t discover the Club Lounge until near the end of the cruise. It’s a quieter, cozier spot than the main lounge, and I wish we’d started grabbing our coffee there from day one.

Avalon Waterways Pros and Cons (The Honest Version)

Let’s keep this real. Nothing is perfect, and Avalon is no exception, but it does stand out in many ways.

What I Loved About the Avalon River Cruise

What stood out most wasn’t just one thing. It was how easy everything felt.

• The Panorama Suite’s views from bed were unforgettable
• Excursions were included every day and were very well organized
• Staff felt warm and welcoming
• Drinks were included with meals, and happy hour was a nice touch
• Sleep quality was incredible thanks to the calm river and bedding choices
• Everything ran on time without stress or confusion
• The small ship size made everything feel personal

What I Wish I Knew Before the Avalon River Cruise

There were a few things I didn’t know before setting sail, and although they weren’t deal breakers, they are worth noting.

• The Panorama Suite view isn’t always uninterrupted.
• Bugs can be an issue with the panoramic window open in warm weather.
• Most passengers are North Americans.
• Evening entertainment is limited and low-key.
• Bring euros for tips for local guides and drivers.

Why I Loved The Romantic Rhine Itinerary

When I think back on this cruise, I don’t remember it as a list of ports.

I remember the feeling of constantly discovering something new.

One morning, I was wandering the storybook streets of Colmar.

The next afternoon, I was enjoying lunch inside a centuries-old German castle.

Then I was sipping wine in the Alsace countryside before sailing past medieval castles in the Rhine Gorge.

That variety is what made this itinerary so special.

For anyone considering Avalon Waterways’ Romantic Rhine River Cruise, I can honestly say the itinerary exceeded my expectations. It strikes a wonderful balance between iconic cities like Amsterdam and Cologne and smaller places like Colmar and Rüdesheim, which I might never have visited on my own.

Several of these destinations deserve far more than a few paragraphs, and I’ll be sharing detailed guides for each stop to help you plan your own Rhine River adventure in the near future.

After seeing how magical these towns were in the summer, I’m already planning to go back for a Christmas Markets sailing.

I can only imagine how beautiful Rüdesheim and Cologne are decked out for the holidays.

Was an Avalon River Cruise Worth It?

As I flew home after nearly three weeks in Europe, I found myself thinking less about the places we visited and more about how the trip made me feel.

There was something refreshing about slowing down.

We wandered through medieval streets, lingered over local wine, watched castles drift past our window, and never once had to worry about packing another suitcase.

Could we have planned a similar adventure on our own? Probably.

But once I added up the cost of hotels, transportation, meals, guided tours, and the time it would have taken to organize everything, I realized the value of having it all handled for us.

Instead of managing logistics, we spent our time making memories. To me, that’s worth a lot.

Who I Think Will Love an Avalon River Cruise

By the end of the week, I realized river cruising attracts a different kind of traveler than ocean cruising.

People weren’t on board for Broadway-style shows, casinos, or endless activities. They were there because they genuinely wanted to experience Europe at a slower pace.

That was one of the things I appreciated most about Avalon. The cruise had structure without feeling rigid.

Each evening, our cruise director laid out the next day’s plans, the excursions were well organized, and when it was time to leave, the bus actually left on time.

As someone who hates waiting around for people who are running late, I appreciated that more than I can explain.

At the same time, river cruising isn’t the right fit for everyone.

If you love late-night entertainment or a ship packed with activities, this style of travel may feel a little too quiet.

And as an introvert, I found that the intimacy of the ship came with a tradeoff.

There really aren’t many places to completely disappear for a while, and after a full day of touring, I was usually ready for a little more solitude than the ship naturally offered.

Dinner was another example. The main dining room is intentionally social, and meals often stretch close to two hours as guests linger over conversation between courses.

My husband loved that part of the experience. I enjoyed it too, but by dinnertime, my social battery was usually running low.

Thankfully, Avalon also offers lighter fare in the Panorama Lounge, and next time I think I’d take advantage of that option at least once or twice.

None of that would keep me from sailing with Avalon again. It just helped me understand the rhythm of river cruising a little better.
