Where to Stay on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

One of my favorite spring trips in the United States was to Kentucky for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. There is just something about rolling hills, historic distilleries, small-town charm, and a good restaurant at the end of a day of bourbon tasting that makes this trip so much fun.

If you are planning a bourbon getaway, one of the biggest questions is where to stay on the Bourbon Trail.

The answer depends on the kind of trip you want.

Some travelers want nightlife and big-city energy. Others want a walkable small town packed with bourbon history. Some want a central base that makes it easy to reach several distilleries without too much driving.

The good news is that there is no one wrong answer.

The three main areas to consider are Louisville, Bardstown, and the Frankfort area. Each one offers something a little different, and each makes a great home base for exploring the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Take a quick look at my Bourbon Trail map below to see how Louisville, Bardstown, and Frankfort are laid out and which area makes the most sense for your stay.

I’ve marked all the best places to stay along with my favorite distilleries.

Choose Louisville for…

  • A wide range of hotels, from major chains to boutique stays
  • Great restaurants and cocktail bars
  • Easy access to the Urban Bourbon Trail
  • Museums, entertainment, and nightlife
  • A convenient airport and an easy starting point for your trip

Choose Bardstown for…

  • A central location near many distilleries
  • A beautiful small town with lots of bourbon history
  • Boutique and historic lodging choices
  • A quieter and more relaxed atmosphere
  • A destination that feels deeply tied to Kentucky’s bourbon heritage

Choose Frankfort for…

  • Proximity to some of the most in-demand bourbon distilleries
  • A central location between Louisville and Lexington
  • Plenty of restaurants and a relaxed town atmosphere
  • Access to Kentucky state history
  • Easy side trips into beautiful horse country

Where to Stay on the Bourbon Trail Based on Your Travel Style

When deciding where to stay on the Bourbon Trail, think about what matters most to you.

Do you want lots of restaurant choices and nightlife after tours and tastings? Choose Louisville.

Do you want to be close to the highest concentration of distilleries? Choose Bardstown.

Do you want a small-town setting with history, horse country, and a more relaxed pace? Choose Frankfort or Versailles.

Louisville, Bardstown, and Frankfort all work well, but they fit different kinds of travelers.

Stay in Louisville for Big-City Energy and Plenty To Do

Louisville has tons of hotel choices, restaurant options, museums, nightlife, and easy access to bourbon experiences, making it a great place to stay on the Bourbon Trail.

I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Louisville in Downtown Louisville and loved it. The location was such a good fit for my first Kentucky Bourbon Trail trip.

I could walk to restaurants and museums, and it also put me close to the Urban Bourbon Trail, which is perfect if you want to keep the bourbon experience going after your distillery tours.

Louisville has plenty to do beyond the distilleries, which is one of the reasons I liked staying here.

You can spend time at Churchill Downs, tour museums along Museum Row, or just enjoy a long dinner and a good cocktail after a day of tastings.

If you want help planning how to fit both distilleries and city highlights into your time here, I mapped it all out in my Kentucky Bourbon Trail itinerary.

I think you will like Louisville, especially if this is your first time visiting and you want a fun mix of bourbon and city life.

Hotels in Louisville to consider

  • Hyatt Regency Louisville – My pick. Walkable, comfortable, and right in the middle of everything
  • The Brown Hotel – A historic stay known for its Southern charm and the original Hot Brown
  • 21C Museum Hotel – A boutique hotel that doubles as a contemporary art museum, right on Museum Row, with an excellent on-site restaurant and bourbon bar

Stay in Bardstown for Bourbon History and a Central Location

If you want to be surrounded by bourbon history and stay in one of Kentucky’s prettiest small towns, Bardstown is hard to beat.

Bardstown feels classic Kentucky.

This charming, historic, and beautifully walkable town has local restaurants, old buildings, and a deep connection to bourbon.

It also sits in a very convenient location for visiting many of the distilleries along the trail, making it one of the most practical choices for travelers trying to fit a lot into a short trip.

For many people, Bardstown is the best answer to where to stay on the Bourbon Trail because it offers both atmosphere and convenience.

You are close to major distilleries, but you also get that small-town feel that makes the trip special.

One of the things I loved about this area is how scenic it is.

I highly recommend a stop at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and a nice break between distillery visits.

Stay in Frankfort for Bourbons, History, and Horse Country

Frankfort and nearby Versailles are two more excellent options, and these often get overlooked compared with Louisville and Bardstown.

This area gives you access to some of the most sought-after and best Kentucky bourbon distilleries on the trail.

It also has a slightly bigger small-town feel, with a good mix of restaurants, local history, and a location that works well for exploring both bourbon country and nearby horse country.

Frankfort sits between Louisville and Lexington, while Versailles is just south of Frankfort. So, both are convenient if you want flexibility in your itinerary.

These two towns are also a good choice if you want to combine bourbon touring with scenic drives and a taste of Kentucky’s famous bluegrass landscapes.

Hotels in Frankfort to Consider

  • The Delegate Hotel – Boutique-style stay with modern touches in a historic setting
  • Hampton Inn Frankfort – A reliable, comfortable option with easy access to nearby distilleries. Great if you want something simple, consistent, and well-located

Hotels in Versailles to Consider

  • The Woodford Hotel – A boutique stay in downtown Versailles with bourbon-themed touches and a great location near Woodford Reserve and horse country
  • Rose Hill Inn – An elegant, historic inn with beautifully designed rooms and a quiet, refined atmosphere

Unique Places to Stay on the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky

Kentucky has some unique lodging options that go beyond a standard hotel room.

Have you ever stayed at a distillery? Well, now you can.

The Log Still Distillery offers stays right at their distillery in either a historic lodge, farmhouse, or mansion. Travelers who want bourbon woven right into the setting can’t get much closer than this.

Unless, of course, you want to stay in a bourbon barrel, which you can do at Bourbon Barrel Retreats

Each “barrel” is a cozy, private lodging unit tucked a little off the main trail, giving you a quiet escape after a day of tastings. On-site, you’ll find a restaurant for easy meals, a fire pit area perfect for gathering and relaxing, and hot tubs under the stars for a truly memorable evening.

It’s a little out of the way, but the unique experience and serene setting make it worth the drive.

My Advice for Where to Stay on the Bourbon Trail

The best place to stay is the one that matches how you like to travel.

Some people want rooftop cocktails and hotel points. Some want historic inns and front porch charm. Some want a location that makes distillery hopping easier.

Kentucky manages to offer all three, which is part of what makes the Bourbon Trail such a fun getaway.

For my trip, Louisville was a great fit because I loved being downtown, close to restaurants and museums, and near the Urban Bourbon Trail.

But if I were planning a return trip focused on a quieter pace and a more immersive bourbon-town feel, Bardstown would be very tempting.

That is the beauty of planning a Kentucky bourbon trip. You can shape it around your style.
