Getting to Stowe, Vermont

I started my journey by flying into Boston.

After picking up a rental car, I drove from Boston to Stowe for a leisurely 3-hour drive through winding backroads and colorful forests.

There are plenty of opportunities to stop along the way, such as cute little towns and roadside farm stands overflowing with pumpkins and apples. If you’re a fan of fall foliage, and who isn’t, this drive will be one to remember.

For those who prefer a more direct route, Burlington International Airport in Vermont is about 45 minutes from Stowe. You can rent a car there and skip some of the Boston traffic.

Day 1: Morning Coffee and Downtown Stroll

My first stop in Stowe? Coffee.

Black Cap Coffee & Bakery of Vermont quickly became my morning ritual. Their freshly brewed coffee is the perfect warm-up for exploring downtown.

I wandered the quaint streets, popping into local shops like the Stowe Mercantile,, where I picked up maple syrup and cozy gifts.

Of course, no visit to Stowe would be complete without snapping a photo in front of Stowe Community Church, the iconic white church on Main Street. It’s a postcard-worthy spot.

After a leisurely morning, I went to The Butler’s Pantry. Their pancakes, drenched in pure Vermont maple syrup, are worth the trip alone.

Pro tip: Get there early. The cozy atmosphere makes it a popular breakfast spot.

Iconic Stops and Shopping

With breakfast fueling me, I set out to find the “Welcome to Stowe” mural at Vermont Chocolatier Lake Champlain Chocolates, located where Laughing Moon Chocolates once stood.

Trip Tip: Before leaving, taste the dark chocolate sea salt caramels. They are so good! The cute Stowe, VT labeled sweets also make good souvenir treats.

This mural is an Instagram gem and a fun little stop to capture the spirit of Stowe.

Next, it was time for nature. Moss Glen Falls was my destination.

This short hike to Vermont’s tallest waterfall is a must-do. The forest was alive with reds, oranges, and yellows—it felt like walking through a living painting.

Did you know that Vermont, or as the French call it, “Vert Mont,” translates to “Green Mountain?”

This lovely state is quite impressive, famous for its picturesque covered bridges, breathtaking landscapes, and delicious maple syrup.

And wait until you experience fall here. The typically green mountains come alive in a riot of red and orange hues. Truly, autumn in Vermont is an unforgettable sight!

Day 1: More Outdoor Adventures

For lunch, I stopped at Idletyme Brewing Company. Their fried pickle spears are a revelation and the flight of craft beer? A must-try.

It’s a laid-back spot that feels quintessentially Vermont. Budget an hour for this relaxing lunch break.

The Stowe Recreation Path was calling my name after lunch.

The Stowe Recreation Path

Trapp Family Lodge Stowe VT

Stowe has an award-winning recreational path from the town center just behind the church to Top Notch Resort.

It is a paved path over five miles long that weaves through the town connecting businesses, restaurants, swimming holes, and accommodations. There are numerous access points along the way.

Take advantage of the gorgeous weather, few bugs, and limited crowds in the fall to enjoy this path and numerous other trails ranging from easy to more challenging levels.

Click here for a complete list of the trails in and near Stowe.

I ended my day visiting the Trapp Family Lodge, owned by the von Trapp family, yes, that von Trapp family from the Sound of Music.

I spent time exploring the property, which offers stunning mountain views, hiking trails, and even its own brewery. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the beauty of Vermont.

Day 2: Scenic Drives and Mountaintop Views

The Stowe Mountain Resort is nine miles outside of town. During the summer and fall, visitors can enjoy many activities in the area.

The historic Auto Toll Road is a 4.5-mile drive that takes you up Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest mountain at 4,395 feet above sea level. Be prepared for amazing views.

In addition to a magnificent drive, hiking and walking trails surround the area.

During the peak foliage season, the hikes are quite beautiful.

If hiking is not your thing, you can still enjoy the mountains.

Take a scenic ride up the mountain on the Gondola SkyRide.

Tickets are $35 for adults.

While you are in the area, visit the Vermont State Park called Smugglers’ Notch State Park. It is open to visitors through the middle of October.

You will find more scenic hikes, campgrounds, and a wetlands boardwalk here.

Late Lunch at Piecasso

After soaking in the incredible views, we were in the mood for pizza and chose Piecasso Family Pizzeria for a late lunch.

Known for its delicious gourmet pizza and relaxed atmosphere, it was the perfect spot to refuel after a day of adventure.

Day 3: Last Stops and Farewell to Stowe

It was our last day in Stowe before heading to the Kancamangus Highway in New Hampshire. But before leaving, there were a few more stops to make.

Visit a Haunted Covered Bridge

When visiting Stowe, Vermont in the fall, don’t miss Gold Brook Covered Bridge, a local treasure affectionately known as Emily’s Covered Bridge.

This charming bridge has an eerie secret. It’s said to be haunted by a jilted young woman. As you venture onto the bridge, make sure to read the signs recounting the chilling, captivating story behind its haunting.

This ghostly tale adds another layer of intrigue to your visit. Who knows, you might even feel an ethereal presence alongside you. It’s all part of the unique Stowe experience!

Vermont Products for the Road

On our way out of town, we stopped at Vermont Artisan Coffee & Tea Co. You can’t miss it; it’s in a huge red barn.

Vermont Artisan Coffee House

This spot is a paradise for coffee lovers, offering an array of expertly brewed coffee and locally blended teas.

It’s a great place to grab a cup to-go or enjoy a quiet moment before hitting the road. Plan a few minutes here to savor the flavors and pick up some unique coffee or tea blends as souvenirs.

Visit an Apple Cider Mill

An adorable cider mill called the Cold Hollow Cider Mill is located just as you leave Stowe.

Unfortunately, there are no apple trees on site, so you can’t go apple picking, but inside, you can watch the cider process, taste the cider, and visit the gift shop. The shop is a treasure trove of Vermont-made goodies and fresh apple cider, perfect for the journey home.

I have three words for you, though – Apple Cider Donuts!

Have you ever tasted these gems? Being from the south, I had never heard of apple cider donuts before visiting Vermont. They are warm, sugary, and absolutely delicious.

Trust me when I tell you that you will want a dozen of these.

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory

I couldn’t resist one last stop outside Stowe at the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory in Waterbury, Vermont.

The factory offers tours, serves ice cream, and sells souvenirs.

The line for the factory tour was outrageous, so we bought souvenirs and toured the grounds instead.

The grounds had fun photo opportunities and a nice large area to walk around.

Souvenirs include t-shirts, stickers, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream scoops, and Christmas ornaments sold out of an old airstream.

It was really cute!

My favorite part of our visit was the Flavor Graveyard, which is near the top parking lot in the back of the property.

The Flavor Graveyard is a whimsical graveyard with colorful, cute, and sassy headstones with epitaphs written for each of the flavors that have been retired. If you are a Saturday Night Live fan, you will get the “Schweddy Balls.”
