A Guide to Monterey’s Spectacular Whale Watching Season

With vibrant marine life bursting at its shores, I eagerly anticipated the Monterey whale watching season. Monterey, located on California’s central coast, is a premier whale-watching destination I was first drawn to through Instagram. Having posted about my Alaskan whale-watching experiences, the algorithm pointed the Monterey Bay Whale tours in my direction, and I am so happy it did.

Fortunately, I traveled from Texas to Monterey recently and can’t wait to share the experience with you.

Monterey is positioned along Monterey Bay and offers one of the prime vantage points in the state for whale enthusiasts. The Bay’s nutrient-rich waters attract various whale species, including humpback whales, blue whales, gray whales, orcas, and even the occasional minke whale.

The peak whale-watching season typically spans from April to December, aligning with these magnificent creatures’ migration and feeding patterns.

During this time, visitors have a high chance of witnessing awe-inspiring displays of whales breaching, tail-slapping, and feeding in the bountiful Pacific waters.

Here is what I learned from a recent trip and what you can use to help plan your best whale-watching experience in California.

Why Monterey?

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, situated along California’s scenic coastline, is a haven for marine conservation and breathtaking natural beauty.

Extending from just north of San Francisco down to Cambria, this sanctuary safeguards a vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean along the California coastline.

With over 36,000 square kilometers of protected waters, the Bay offers a safe space for sea creatures to thrive.

And when the Monterey whale watching season arrives, typically from April to December, the sanctuary truly comes to life.

During these months, you can glimpse magnificent whales, such as humpbacks, blues, and gray whales.

Recently, some of the most elusive and rare species have been spotted in these waters. The highly endangered Northern Right Whale and a rare all-white killer whale nicknamed Frosty have been spotted on whale-watching tours in Monterey Bay.

This sanctuary is not just a haven for whales; it shows the commitment to preserving the ocean’s wonders for generations.

Best Time to go Whale Watching in Monterey

Let’s dive into the best whale watch season for Monterey.

Below, you will see there really is no lousy time to go whale watching at Monterey Bay.

You must choose which whales you most want to see and then plan your visit during that season.

After whale-watching in Alaska several times, I can tell you that my Monterey Bay whale watching experience far exceeded my expectations.

Unlike in Alaska, Monterey Bay whales are far friendlier and put on a show for our boat throughout the tour.

Spring

A fascinating migration begins in the spring months, from April to June.

Gray whales journey from the warm Mexican waters and head toward the chilly Bering Sea feeding spots. It is expected to spot mother whales with their gray whale calves as they migrate north.

They’re not alone on this adventure. The humpback whales also join in for their feeding rituals. It’s an incredible sight to behold!

Summer

Something amazing happens along the shores when summer arrives from July to September. Humpback whales take center stage, showing off their impressive breaching displays and feasting plentifully.

Giant blue whales are also drawn to the bustling coastal waters, enticed by the thriving krill populations.

Fall

The autumn months of October to November offer enticing whale-watching prospects, with humpback and blue whales lingering for plentiful food, occasionally accompanied by sightings of orcas during their coastal migration.

I chose to visit Monterey in October, a time most locals call their summer since temperatures are at their highest. The humpback interactions during this trip were spectacular!

Winter

Even in the quieter winter months, glimpses of gray whales migrating southward to warmer breeding territories may unfold, ensuring the ocean’s surprises endure even amid tranquility.

When you’re ready to visit Monterey, you will have a variety of whale watching trips from which to choose.

Most tours operate year-round and offer both full-day and half-day whale watch trips. Please note that most tours depart from Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey; however, some may leave from Moss Landing. Make sure you note where your tour departs from.

All the tours below come highly rated, have naturalists or biologists on board, and follow US Coast Guard safety guidelines. Some allow children and/or pets on board.

Children under three are not allowed on this tour.

On this 4-hour Whale Watching Experience with Discovery Whale Watch Tours, you’ll hop on an eco-friendly boat with experts who know much about the ocean. Encounter magnificent marine life, including humpback whales, gray whales, blue whales, orcas, dolphins, sea otters, and more, all in their natural habitat.

Learn about the region’s rich marine ecosystem, history, and conservation efforts while enjoying the stunning coastal scenery.

Monterey Bay Whale Watch

Monterey Bay Whale Watch is owned and operated by a Marine Biologist, Nancy Black.

The boat offers both lower and upper deck choices. I enjoyed the lower deck and being close to the water.

A naturalist is on board to point out wildlife and give you exciting stories about the known whales. The employees are super friendly and caring toward the passengers.

Sightings vary with the seasons and weather conditions, so that no trip will be the same. Prepare for an exciting and ever-changing experience.

Preparing for a Monterey Whale Watching Trip

To fully enjoy the exhilarating Monterey whale watching season, it’s crucial to be thoroughly prepared for this awe-inspiring adventure.

Arrive early

Plan to arrive early to give yourself ample time for parking and any last-minute hiccups.

Most Monterey whale-watching tours depart from Fisherman’s Wharf. There are plenty of paid parking spots, but you must pay using an app or at the kiosk, both of which take time.

Fisherman’s Wharf can be a bit tricky to navigate. Look for the pink building with the lighthouse and follow the boardwalk to the water to find most whale watching tour boats.

Purchase your tickets in advance.

Additionally, pre-book your tickets online to secure your spot on the boat and save you from long queues at ticket counters.

Take sea sickness medication.

You will want to take sea sickness medications an hour before departure. Remember, sea sickness medication acts as prevention. Once you realize you need it, it is too late.

The boat employees emphasized this before our departure. Unfortunately, several people on our boat learned that lesson the hard way and had a very unpleasant voyage.

Wear Sunscreen

Even if the sun is not shining, you must wear sun protection. You will get more sun than you think.

Dress in layers

Dressing appropriately for the adventure is also essential, so wearing layers and athletic bottom shoes is strongly recommended.

Monterey’s coastal weather can change quickly, and being well-prepared ensures you stay comfortable and safe throughout the trip.

Whale watching in Monterey prioritizes conservation. Strict guidelines protect whales, promoting safe distances and educating visitors for responsible viewing.

The boats keep a safe distance; if you are lucky, the whales will approach the boat and put on a show.

Photo Tips for Monterey Whale Watching Season

Being out in the open sea lets you see whales up close. It’s a beautiful sight! You will want to take photos. But taking photos on a boat is not always easy.

Use burst mode on your smartphone camera.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a fancy camera. You don’t necessarily need to be armed with a professional camera to capture good pictures. You can use your phone.

Today’s phones can take great pictures. In fact, as a casual tourist, your cell phone camera can sufficiently capture those awe-inspiring moments if used effectively.

Get to know your camera settings before the trip. There’s a mode called “burst mode.” It’s great for capturing action shots.

Remember, when it comes to taking pictures of whales, patience is vital.

TRIP TIP: Often, the whale-watching tours will have a professional photographer on board who will sell their photos from the trip at a reasonable price. Ask when you board the boat.
