Getting To and Around Puerto Rico

San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in the Caribbean.

With over 120 daily flights from the major U.S. airports, San Juan is easily accessible. I chose to fly to Florida and spend a day exploring Fort Lauderdale before flying to San Juan.

Flight from Puerto Rico

As you fly to Puerto Rico, you will be treated to the unbelievable Caribbean turquoise waters below.

You will definitely want a window seat for this flight.

The San Juan airport is easy to navigate once you land with clearly marked signs in English.

Once you pick up your baggage, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or book a ride share.

Some travel guides will tell you to rent a car to explore more of the island, but since you only have four days, I would opt to take a taxi or Uber, both of which are readily available.

Breakfast at the Kaffe Haus

Start day one with breakfast at Old San Juan’s Kaffe Haus.

The food at The Kaffe Haus is truly scrumptious!

Because of its popularity, you may have to wait for a table. Once you’ve put your name on the waiting list, you can visit one of the many shops within walking distance.

The brunch menu has so many fabulous options, and the food looks amazing.

I recommend trying the renowned Mallorca Chicken Sandwich for a filling breakfast. Tender chicken is stacked on Mallorca bread, drizzled with garlic aioli and dressed with crisp lettuce and ripe tomatoes.

The dust of powdered sugar on the bread is the sweetness you didn’t realize you needed.

Although I’m not usually one for omelets, the fresh veggie and bacon omelet is perfection.

And for a sweet finale, don’t miss the Chocolate Temptation. This heavenly coffee concoction of Nutella and hazelnut melds together and is absolutely sinful, in a good way!

You’ll become a Kaffe Haus aficionado for sure after tasting it.

Stroll through Old San Juan

Walking through Old San Juan is a delightful experience that takes you back in time to a different era.

The blue cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and historic landmarks make for a charming atmosphere.

Old San Juan
San Juan Streets

As you stroll through the city, there are a few places that you simply can’t miss.

Umbrella Street four days in San Juan

A standout attraction in the area is the eye-catching Calle de la Fortaleza, also known as the colorful umbrella street.

Here, hundreds of vivid umbrellas are suspended above, forming a lively and whimsical canopy overhead.

You’ll find the Called de la Fortaleza in front of the Governor’s Mansion in Old San Juan.

Another must-see spot is the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a 16th-century fortress that offers stunning ocean and city views.

Old San Juan fort

Other notable spots include the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the Paseo de la Princesa promenade, and the La Fortaleza governor’s mansion.

Finally, you must visit Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis cemetery.

I promise; I really don’t have a thing for cemeteries despite writing about them in both the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and New Orlean’s Girls’ Trip posts. It’s just this historic oceanfront landmark that houses many prominent Puerto Rican natives is one that shouldn’t be missed.

Old San Juan in Puerto Rico i love san juan sign

For a fun photo in front of the I love San Juan letters, visit Plaza Colón near the Castillo San Cristobal. It’s in the courtyard in front of the Kaffe Haus.

It’s also located where most taxis and ubers drop off visitors heading into Old San Juan.

Traditional Puerto Rican Lunch in Old San Juan

You can choose from a wide variety of restaurants in Old San Juan to enjoy a late lunch or early dinner.

Stop at Puerto Criollo near Plaza de Colon for delicious authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. The garlic chicken with a Puerto Rican dish called mamposteao is fabulous, as is the chicken stuffed avocado.
